From the Founder of BABY LOVES SLEEP:
"Good, deep, restful sleep is the goal of every parent with a baby and young children. It was forever my goal and I know that there are many parents and babies losing sleep as they search for the solution that will give everyone the restful sleep they so desperately need."
When my second baby was born, I was faced with the ongoing struggle of helping him get the sleep that he so desperately needed.
In the beginning, he enjoyed the security of being swaddled like a cocoon but as soon as he started to roll it became unsafe to continue swaddling him.
I tried going cold turkey letting him go free arms but I found myself in a downward spiral of sleep deprivation, frustration and feelings of self doubt as a parent. I tried every product that was out there to try and solve the problem, but nothing really worked.
So I set out to create the Sleepy Hugs sleep sack that helped him gently transition from swaddling to free arms and loving sleep again!
I knew for sure that I wasn't the only one facing this problem, so I made it my goal to share my sleep solution that promises to give babies and their parents the restful sleep they so desperately deserve.
I went on to extend the Sleepy Hugs range to accommodate the growing needs of babies to cover all ages and developmental stages (from newborn to toddlerhood), including the innovative Koala Hugs wraps, a clever newborn wrap with built in arm pockets that removes the guesswork of swaddling for new parents and guarantees a perfectly inescapable wrap every time.
"Night waking and losing sleep for the first few months is a normal part of being a parent to a gorgeous new baby."
Caring for my own baby son, I expected to have interrupted sleep for some time as he navigated this new world and needed feeding and care throughout the night to grow and thrive. However as the night waking wore on and on, month after month, both he and I became desperately tired and frustrated as the lack of rest took its toll.
We both needed deep, restful sleep.
The reason he was waking was due to his startle reflex (also known as the Moro reflex), that all babies are born with. It is where a sudden movement of their arms will wake them, causing them to cry and need calming and soothing to return to sleep. Many babies are swaddled to help calm the startle reflex and mimic the comfortable sensation of the womb, helping them to sleep through the startle reflex. However my boy, like many others, liked to move his arms as he slept and his little hands would escape the swaddle, leaving him without it’s calming sensation when the startle reflex occurred.
Many sleeping bags that were available restricted arm movement and my son hated them, so armed with an idea and a sewing machine, I created something new: a baby sleeping sack that was roomy enough for arm movement, but with just enough resistance to keep the startle reflex from waking him.
And it worked! It wasn’t long before my baby was sleeping through the night in the very first Sleepy Hugs sleep sack.
Since then, several other innovative sleep solutions have joined the Sleepy Hugs: The Koala Hugs swaddle wrap, a reinvention of the traditional swaddle blanket was introduced to gently keep arms within its calming layers. Then the Hands In & Out sleep sack evolved from the Sleepy Hugs to suit older babies ready to take the next step, allowing free hands, but still needing security. There's also a genious Sleepy Toddler onesie suit that helps active toddlers transition out of a sleep sack and into pyjamas without the need for blankets!
So many parents are losing sleep as their child wakes through the night and I believe in sharing these sleep solutions with tired families everywhere.
I know that parents and babies who sleep well are able to navigate everyday challenges in their stride, growing and thriving together.
